Reds World Series Odds

Thanks to a 7-2 win over the Minnesota Twins last Friday, the Cincinnati Reds clinched a playoff berth in this weird and abbreviated MLB season.

It’s only the fifth time since 1991 that the Reds have made the postseason.

The team began its 2020 campaign as a popular futures pick, given the relatively long odds and the team having one of the best pitching staffs in baseball. The Reds starters ended the season with the fourth-best ERA in MLB, a very solid 3.50. The team was widely ranked third in starting pitching before the season.

In mid-September, the Reds appeared unlikely to make the playoffs, but they won 11 of their last 14 games to salvage a 31-29 record. The Reds finished third in the National League Central Division, just three games behind the Cubs. The St. Louis Cardinals finished second, a game ahead of Cincinnati at 30-28.

At DraftKings, the Phillies’ 30/1 World Series odds remained hours after the signing news broke, as did their 20/1 NL pennant odds and 7/1 odds to win the NL East. At FanDuel, the Phillies were 35/1 to win the World Series prior to news of the signing and moved all the way to 33/1. January 20 Update. World Series Futures. The Reds were being offered at 5000 to win the 2020 World Series by PointsBet immediately after the Washington Nationals won the title in October - tied for 17th among the 30 Major League Baseball teams. With pitchers and catchers due to report in two weeks, those odds have dipped to 3000, although still tied for just 14th overall.

The Reds will take a playoff appearance however they can get one, as the franchise last made the postseason in 2013. Could the Reds continue their hot streak and find themselves with their first World Series title since 1990? Indiana mobile sportsbooks are offering folks in the tri-state area some lines on the team’s playoff run.

BetMGM with the best price

If you’re going to bet on the Reds to win it all, BetMGM is your obvious choice, absent any promotional offers. The sportsbook is giving bettors +3500, for an implied probability of 2.78%. A total of 16 teams make the playoffs, and if all things were equal, every team would have a 6.25% chance. If you believe the Reds’ pitching staff can get the job done, +3500 might be worth a flier.

Cincinnati’s offense ranked 27th in the majors in runs scored and last in batting average, but the bats came alive recently. The team appears to be hitting its stride at just the right time.

“In the postseason, it has been proven many times that pitching is what carries teams — dominant pitching, guys that can miss bats, guys that can limit damage, guys that throw hard and have good stuff,” Reds ace Trevor Bauer said Monday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We believe in our pitching staff.”

Bauer also defended the team’s hitting in 2020: “Also, our offense has been one of the most unlucky offenses in who-knows-how-long. You can’t stay that unlucky forever. We’re playing a lot better as a team defensively, putting together good at-bats. The bullpen is pitching great. We’re very confident with where our team is. We feel like we’re peaking at the right time.”

The prices at other sportsbooks aren’t competitive with BetMGM’s.

DraftKings/BetRivers are offering +2600, with FanDuel at +2400 and PointsBet at +2000.

The Reds were +2500 before the season started at all of the aforementioned sportsbooks.

The books had the over/under win total at 31.5, and unfortunately for those taking the over, as many tri-state bettors probably did, the team fell just short.

The Reds face the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday in their first playoff game.

Dodgers and Padres favored in National League

The Dodgers (+350) made one of the most surprising free-agent moves of the off-season, adding reigning AL Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer to a rotation that already features Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler. Of course, their batting lineup looks pretty good too with two former MVPs in Cody Bellinger and Mookie Betts and the recently re-signed Justin Turner.

Buoyed by 22-year-old superstar Fernando Tatis Jr., the Padres (+850) leapt into championship contention last season before being swept by Los Angeles in the NLDS after losing starters Mike Clevinger and Dinelson Lamet to injury. San Diego made sure they won’t be short on pitching this October, acquiring All-Stars Blake Snell and Yu Darvish. All they need to do now is get Fernando’s dad hitting clean-up.

Flush with Steve Cohen’s cash, the Mets (+900) acquired All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor and starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco from Cleveland. Assuming Noah Syndergaard can make a successful return from Tommy John surgery, New York should be legitimate contenders. At the very least, they’re a good bet to end Atlanta’s three-year reign in the AL East after the Braves (+1100) stayed quiet in free agency.

The Cardinals (+2500) are easily the best value on the board after stealing superstar Nolan Arenado from the Rockies. The 29-year-old third baseman is a five-time All-Star with four Silver Sluggers and eight Gold Gloves. And St. Louis basically got him for nothing.

Yankees the top contender in American League

George Steinbrenner is probably rolling in his grave after the Yankees (+700) sat out of free agency to avoid the luxury tax. The Bronx Bombers will again score a lot of runs after re-signing MVP candidate DJ Lemahieu, but their pitching staff is razor thin after Gerrit Cole.

Last year’s off-season darling, the White Sox (+900) lived up to the hype by snapping their 12-year postseason drought. After being swept by Oakland in the wild-card round, Chicago went out and signed A’s closer Liam Hendriks. One of the best relievers in all of baseball, the 31-year-old has a 1.79 ERA, 39 saves and 161 strikeouts over the last two seasons.

The Blue Jays (+2200) seem oddly undervalued by oddsmakers considering they added infielder Marcus Semien and 2017 World Series MVP George Springer in free agency. Toronto should have one of the best offenses in all of baseball, however, they’ll probably need it after failing to land a marquee starter.
